Founded in 1970 during the expansion of Romania's medical education, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova (UMFCV), Faculty of Medicine is Oltenia's premier medical institution. The faculty began admitting students in October of that year; by the time students graduated in 1976 they were Craiova’s first physicians educated locally. Founded by an edict from the government (HCM no. 59/1970), it represented principles of modernity at a time when national healthcare was expanding. Dentistry was added by 1990, and then Pharmacy in 1996 with planned funded positions. The promulgation of Law 119 in 1998 allowed FMK to detach fully from University of Craiova and begin development between 2007-2012 (insitu/in-situ) modules enabling new buildings & modern office space for leading departments with resurgence unintegrated into a found campus well integrated; towered by Corpul B (1982).
UMFCV is now a successful institution featuring three distinct faculties– Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, running programs as per EU requirements and having gained recognition by WHO and NMC for practicing worldwide. It serves thousands of patients each year, training 150-200 doctors per year in addition to international cohorts and it retains regional leadership in Oltenia. Marking 25 years of university status and 53 as a Medicine, the anniversary was celebrated for true acumen in the field under Prof. Tudorel Ciurea, founder of this institution. Housed in facilities like Bvd. 1 Mai nr. 66, it stresses research as well as clinical training at affiliated hospitals. Moreover, it progressively develops making UMFCV an essential part of Romania medical heritage and innovation.
